Storing Your MX5 Hardtop
Accessories No Comments »The Mazda MX5 hardtop is a favorite among aftermarket accessories. The hardtop is not only stylish, but does a great deal in keeping the interior of the vehicle warm when the temperatures began dropping towards the winter months. Hardtops also help reduce the noise level inside the car. When the snow thaws, the ice melts, and temperatures climb high enough to tempt you into going topless (your car, that is) the question of what to do with the hardtop rears its ugly head. Storing any vehicle hardtop is always a problem. These accessories are quite large, and -- depending on how they're stored -- take up a lot of room in the garage.
There are three typical options for Mx5 hardtop storage. The first option is purchasing the stand Mazda makes specially for this problem. The second option is using a storage bag. The third option is coming up with a clever solution,, such as building a hoist from levers, pulleys, and very strong webbing, and storing it off the floor or wall. Home made solutions needn't be very difficult, but tend to run into the problem of scratching or damaging the hardtop or neglecting to protect it from these dangers.
The biggest advantage the stand has over other options is that it is specifically designed for the express purpose of not damaging a hardtop for the Mx5 while being stored. The stands resemble tripods that you either lean your hardtop against or set on top of. While the actual process of storing your hardtop like this won't damage it, it offers no protection against incidental damage while it's sitting there (such as getting knocked over).
A storage bag offers the best protection from scratches and incidental damages by covering the surface of the hardtop. These bags also generally feature mounting points to enable it to be hung from a wall -- freeing up valuable floor space. Storage bags also offer the advantage of being significantly less expensive (in most cases) than the stand.
